Only around 2% of Colosseum visitors access the underground. Here is how to be one of them and how to choose the right tour
The Colosseum underground, officially the Hypogeum, is the most sought-after and hardest-to-book experience in Rome. Only around 2% of Colosseum visitors gain access to this area. Entry requires a guided tour with a licensed expert, group sizes are capped at 25 people, and the guide must use a whisper system in groups of ten or more. Daily sessions are extremely limited and frequently sell out weeks in advance.
The best Colosseum tours with underground access are available through GetYourGuide, which holds pre-purchased allocations and typically has availability when the official website shows sold out. In peak season, April through October, booking at least three to four weeks ahead is strongly recommended.
The Hypogeum was the hidden machinery of Rome's greatest spectacles. Built approximately a decade after the Colosseum's inauguration by Emperor Domitian, it consists of two levels of tunnels, cages, ramps and wooden hoists that ran beneath the entire arena floor. This subterranean world made possible the dramatic surprise entrances that made Colosseum games so spectacular: gladiators, wild animals and elaborate stage sets could appear from below within seconds, to the roar of 50,000 spectators.
The underground is cool, dimly lit and sometimes damp. Comfortable shoes and a light layer are recommended year-round. Photography without flash and tripod is permitted.
| Tour Type | Price | Duration | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Underground and Arena, small group | from £49 / €54 | 2 to 2.5 hours | Best overall, underground plus arena floor |
| Full Experience, underground, arena, Forum | from £65 / €72 | 3 to 3.5 hours | Maximum coverage, all areas in one visit |
| Underground Night Tour | from £55 / €60 | 2 hours | Atmospheric evening experience, summer only |
| Private Underground Tour | from £120 / €130 | 2.5 to 3 hours | Exclusive access, guide entirely for your group |
The small-group underground and arena tour is the most popular choice. The full experience extending into the Roman Forum is ideal for covering all of ancient Rome in a single guided session. Night tours run on selected evenings in summer and provide a completely different atmosphere with far fewer crowds.
